15 January 2011, I launched a Kickstarter fundraiser...promising that I would "shoot over several days....allow for experimentation on set....break new ground visually….improve location sound recording....total running time for the film....between 65 and 80 minutes."

TAKEN IN is most certainly that, but it has also become a guiding star for my work and career. Moving forward now, I plan to continue making two features per year...on the same, six month schedule.

My next film, GET BETTER, launches a Kickstarter fundraiser today. And, assuming it is funded, there will be a process website like this one, 1 September 2011.

Thank you for your support in this process. I invite you along for the next one, as well.

This is such a great way to make a movie...with you, for you.CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-34323476614712206382011-07-13T08:24:00.000-04:002011-07-13T08:24:50.597-04:00Stammering & Stuttering

How do you step away from something as consuming as making a feature film? Not just when is it done...when is it finished...but, when does the project become personal history instead of active?

I've lived with TAKEN IN...in a very intense way for half a year now. As I reflect on the journey (the last four and a half months documented daily here), I am grateful. I'm proud. I'm...fulfilled and satisfied. The project was exactly what it promised to be. It surprised and delighted me in ways I hadn't expected, and the ways in which it did not succeed were slight.

At the time of its release (two days from today) I am, in many ways, more excited about the film than when I began. But utterly convinced its time to move forward...on to the next film.

Maybe the lesson...the rule of thumb to take away from this process is this: the project becomes history when it can finally stand alone, without me propping it up. Like a child stammering and stuttering into adulthood, eventually they are—for better and worse—a grown-up.CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-49471244616629429692011-07-12T12:44:00.000-04:002011-07-12T12:44:13.736-04:00Just five days until the first public screening.

A collection of excerpts from the 300 short video asks I sent to potential backers prior to making TAKEN IN. Looking back on these videos, I'm kind of amazed...seeing me believing somehow that the film should and would actually happen.CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-61226454312260811382011-07-01T00:00:00.019-04:002011-07-01T00:00:12.999-04:00Behind-the-Scenes Photos!
Just follow Pedro to the photos!
CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-87133656312239950502011-06-27T00:00:00.004-04:002011-06-27T00:00:00.172-04:00Proofread?

CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-51722913067378133862011-06-26T00:00:00.005-04:002011-06-26T00:00:01.830-04:00Summer 2011 \ Screening Events TBA

About to announce summer screening events in Abbeville, Anderson, Asheville, Athens, Atlanta, Charlotte, Charlottesville, Columbia, Conway, Dallas, Dillon, Georgetown, Greenwood, Greer, Hilton Head Island, Houston, Los Angeles, Lexington, Nashville, New York City, North Charleston, Seattle, Simpsonville, and Wilmington.
Kinda seems more helpful for film audiences. But even so, most criticism appears to be less about offering advice and counsel than merely presenting one's thinking..."this is me...as defined by my response to the film I just saw."

Which begs the question, "Who cares what you think?"

When I was younger, I cared what people like Siskel and Ebert thought about the movies. I learned about movies as I listened to them banter back and forth. Both men were film fans, of course. Both enjoyed seeing good films. And usually, when their thumbs pointed down, it was with a degree of sadness.

Siskel and Ebert wanted to like the movies they saw.

Nowadays, most so-called film critics want you to know that they are very smart. Many don't like the cinema, and much as they "understand" the cinema. And almost all communicate their opinions snarkily. Mean and clever. Witty and withering.

Clearly, this is of little use to the filmmaker. And, perhaps, not useful to the audience either. Though there are still a few bright lights remaining. Gene Siskel has passed away, but Roger Ebert soldiers on. And there is Filmspotting, of course. That podcast is all the film criticism any of us (filmmakers and/or audience members) need.CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-19660706781249609622011-06-19T00:00:00.010-04:002011-06-19T00:00:01.807-04:00First Visualization of TAKEN IN.

This snapshot—taken in Athens GA, in the late summer of 2009—was used as an early "visualization" of the TAKEN IN story.

Something about the chaotic nature of the graffiti (discovered on the inside of a men's restroom door at The Grill) made me think of Brooklyn's life...and her relationship with her father.
His song "The Heart Won't be Denied" was just used in the season finale of ABC's "Brothers and Sisters." I first encountered Colin's music on the BATMAN FOREVER soundtrack (which I owned on cassette, I believe). He and his brother appeared as The Devlins on that collection (that featured U2, Seal, and PJ Harvey as well) with a track called "Crossing the River." For TAKEN IN, Colin has recorded U2's "Staring At the Sun." It sounds amazing. The perfect ending to our film.

Boy & Bean is a Portland-based swing/jazz trio featuring Luke and Amber Short with Andrew Jones. I found them via Kickstarter. They needed funds to finish a recording, and I liked what I heard...so Emily and I donated a few dollars. During editing, I'd often play Boy & Bean's record. And eventually, it became clear that it was the perfect ambient music to underscore the Reptile Lagoon scene. (I'm hoping to work with them again on the next film!)

Josh McGill was recommended to me by an old friend and mentor. He told me that the Dallas-based musician was something of a prodigy...obsessively interested in recording technology, widely-varying musical tastes, a wise old soul. Josh and I talked and he went to work composing and recording the main themes for the film. The first time I heard his work, I knew he'd found the sound of TAKEN IN. And as we finish them film, it feels so good to know that he is on our team...bringing us in for a soft, safe landing.

CWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8747885949449425112.post-8643136301057056432011-06-16T00:00:00.001-04:002011-06-16T00:00:00.310-04:00BeginningsCWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06808741883242028832noreply@blogger.com0
